burning limestone
Burning limestone to make lime, used mainly to whitewash houses. Anita remembers:
"As children we had a lot of fun making 'bombs' of limestone. We would put some burned stones in a Nido (powdered milk) can, pour in a quantity of water and slam on the lid and run! It always exploded! Or at least blew off the lid."
